An AI Agent Chose a Gene Therapy and Injected It Into a Live Mouse’s Brain

Last night an AI agent performed brain surgery on a mouse. It picked the drug, the coordinates, and the injection while a human held the kill switch.

A biotech startup let a Claude-based AI agent pick a gene therapy from 19 options, calculate injection coordinates from papers, and control a motorized surgical rig to deliver 250 nanoliters into a living epileptic mouse’s brain. A veterinarian performed the craniotomy and held a physical kill switch; the agent even paused mid-procedure over a safety calibration issue. The mouse recovered.

Vitalik Buterin Ran 100 Days of Airplane Mode and Switched to AI Command Lines

The guy who helped invent the always-on crypto internet just spent 100 days with his phone in airplane mode—and thinks AI will let the rest of us do it too.

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin published “Digital Minimalism,” arguing AI lets people reclaim attention from algorithms and web UIs. He spent 100 days with his phone in airplane mode (Wi-Fi only), replaced X’s native feed with the Firefly aggregator, and started using local AI/CLI tools instead of websites for ENS and payments. He kept the airplane-mode default.

Cisco Gave a 27-Year-Old Unlimited AI Tokens to Rewrite 98% of Its Legacy Code

Cisco just handed a 27-year-old unlimited AI tokens and told him to rewrite 98% of the company’s code. He has four weeks to show it isn’t insane.

Cisco president Jeetu Patel plucked 27-year-old former startup founder Padmanabhan Krishnamurthy (buried five levels down after an acquisition) and gave him unlimited AI tokens plus a two-to-three-person team to rewrite 98% of the company’s decades-old code in 24 months. He has four weeks to prove the approach; Patel told him to “go nuts.” The goal includes migrating to memory-safe languages.

The Biggest AI Labs Just Agreed on One robots.txt Line to Opt Out of Training

Four AI labs just invented a single line of robots.txt that tells all of them at once: don’t train on this.

OpenAI, Google, Microsoft, and Anthropic said they will honor a single new robots.txt policy token (usage_ai-training) so a site can block AI training crawlers in one step instead of listing every bot. Anthropic has started implementing; the others plan support in coming months or 2027. It does not affect already-trained data or non-training uses.

AI Agents Can Now Steer a Radio Telescope Searching for Aliens Using Natural Language

You can now tell an AI “point the telescope at that star and look for aliens” and it actually steers the array.

Breakthrough Listen and the SETI Institute deployed agentic AI at the Allen Telescope Array so researchers can steer antennas, calibrate, fix data errors, and run models on live 2.4-terabit-per-second streams from a single natural-language request. Inference runs on-premises next to the dishes. NVIDIA framed it as looking for signals that might come from aliens—or the AI they built.

French Lawmakers Voted a Tax of €0.055 on Every Gigabyte of Internet Traffic

France just voted to tax every gigabyte that hits your screen. Netflix, Google, and Meta would pay 5.5 cents each time.

On Oct 30 the Assemblée Nationale narrowly approved (11–10) an amendment creating a 5.5-centime-per-gigabyte tax on data sent to French users, paid by platforms (Netflix, Google, Meta, etc.), not consumers or ISPs. It is not yet law—the 2027 budget still has more votes—and could theoretically raise ~€10 billion. Average home usage would imply a sizable monthly cost if fully passed through.
