French Lawmakers Voted a Tax of €0.055 on Every Gigabyte of Internet Traffic
“France just voted to tax every gigabyte that hits your screen. Netflix, Google, and Meta would pay 5.5 cents each time.”
The Story
On Oct 30 the Assemblée Nationale narrowly approved (11–10) an amendment creating a 5.5-centime-per-gigabyte tax on data sent to French users, paid by platforms (Netflix, Google, Meta, etc.), not consumers or ISPs. It is not yet law—the 2027 budget still has more votes—and could theoretically raise ~€10 billion. Average home usage would imply a sizable monthly cost if fully passed through.
Why It Matters
Institutions, money, and internet culture—treating bits like a taxable physical good. Concrete legislative artifact with absurd visual potential (every Netflix hour now has a price tag) and builder/platform implications.
