An AI Agent Chose a Gene Therapy and Injected It Into a Live Mouse’s Brain

“Last night an AI agent performed brain surgery on a mouse. It picked the drug, the coordinates, and the injection while a human held the kill switch.”

The Story

A biotech startup let a Claude-based AI agent pick a gene therapy from 19 options, calculate injection coordinates from papers, and control a motorized surgical rig to deliver 250 nanoliters into a living epileptic mouse’s brain. A veterinarian performed the craniotomy and held a physical kill switch; the agent even paused mid-procedure over a safety calibration issue. The mouse recovered.

Why It Matters

Concrete lab artifact of AI crossing from analysis into physical action on a living body—builders wiring agents to real hardware, institutions (vet oversight, ethics), and a tiny strange future where the model both decides the treatment and drives the needle.
