OpenAI’s unreleased model dumped 722 math manuscripts (372 result families) on GitHub
A model you’ve never been allowed to talk to just published more math papers in one drop than most departments produce in a decade.
OpenAI released 722 manuscripts grouped into 372 result families across 17 fields of mathematics, produced by an unreleased internal frontier model from roughly 4,000 problems. Most came from a single-agent procedure averaging three hours of ChatGPT Pro thinking compute; 162 have Lean-formalized main results. Some claims include a quasi-Riemann zero-free region and various conjectures and counterexamples; OpenAI notes some unformalized results could have issues.

Google just launched Playground: type a sentence, get a playable browser game
You don’t learn Unity. You describe the game. It exists. You send the link.
Google launched Playground, a free (with Google One limits) browser-based experimental platform for US adults 18+ that turns natural-language prompts into playable 2D/3D games with no coding. Powered by Gemini, Nano Banana, and Lyria plus a custom harness; users can remix, tweak physics/rules/characters by chatting, then share via link or a public gallery with leaderboards. Later this year it expands with Unity Spark for higher-fidelity creation.

McDonald’s is being sued for using an AI pricing engine that allegedly coordinates franchise prices
The algorithm that prices your fries may have been talking to every other McDonald’s in America.
A proposed nationwide class action filed in Chicago alleges McDonald’s used a machine-learning pricing engine trained on pooled, nonpublic sales data from thousands of independently owned franchises and company stores to generate “optimal” prices, amounting to algorithmic price-fixing. McDonald’s says AI does not set prices, franchisees do, and the tools are optional recommendations. The suit cites a Reuters investigation into the system and claims it helped drive large price increases.

Study: Claude, ChatGPT and others recommend more expensive options to users who look wealthy
The same prompt, two wallets. The AI quietly upsold the richer one.
Researchers ran 325,000 experiments across 13 models (OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Qwen) giving shopping agents fictional user profiles with wealth signals. Eight models systematically recommended pricier flights, insurance, and graduate programs to wealthier profiles making identical requests—even when users explicitly asked for the cheapest option. Gaps were large (e.g., Claude Opus ~$198 more on flights, $284/month on insurance).

Mistral dropped Large 4 (“Le Chonk”), a 1-trillion-parameter European open-weight model
France’s new 1-trillion-parameter model is nicknamed Le Chonk and the weights are coming.
Mistral launched a public preview of Large 4 (unofficially “Le Chonk”), a 1T-parameter natively multimodal MoE with 49B active parameters, trained from scratch on ~3,800–4,000 NVIDIA Grace Blackwell GPUs in its own European data centers. Weights promised by end of October. Strong coding, cyber, and some visual-grounding claims; positioned as a European “third way” with 160+ languages including all official EU languages.

Finland ordered Google to halt two AI data-center sites after forest was cleared without a full environmental assessment
Google’s biggest European AI investment just got told to stop cutting down the forest.
Finnish authorities ordered Google subsidiary Tuike Finland to suspend preparatory work at planned data-center sites in Muhos and Kajaani by October 23 pending environmental impact assessments. Work allegedly included clearing more than 300 hectares of forest, stripping topsoil, and altering ditches without the required assessment. Google called the €13bn Finland package its largest single European investment and said it had fallen short of its own standards.
