Finland ordered Google to halt two AI data-center sites after forest was cleared without a full environmental assessment

“Google’s biggest European AI investment just got told to stop cutting down the forest.”

The Story

Finnish authorities ordered Google subsidiary Tuike Finland to suspend preparatory work at planned data-center sites in Muhos and Kajaani by October 23 pending environmental impact assessments. Work allegedly included clearing more than 300 hectares of forest, stripping topsoil, and altering ditches without the required assessment. Google called the €13bn Finland package its largest single European investment and said it had fallen short of its own standards.

Why It Matters

The physical cost of the invisible cloud just got a stop-work order in a Nordic forest. Concrete institutional clash (AI infra vs. trees), visual, and a follow-up to the “cloud has a smokestack” feeling without repeating the same story.

Evidence

BBC, Al Jazeera, Finnish Supervisory Agency (LVV) order.
