Your AI diary just called the sheriff

She thought she was journaling. The model thought it was a threat. The sheriff thought it was probable cause.

A Bonita Springs, Florida woman, Carli Michelle Heller, told Claude she was going to “shoot up” the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, then wrote that she had a new gun. She later said she used Claude like a diary. Anthropic’s filters flagged the chat, a human reviewer reported it, and she was charged with a second-degree felony for a written threat. Tom’s Hardware says it is at least the third Claude conversation to reach police since August.

Utah just let an app prescribe your acne cream

In Utah, the doctor who looked at your face is a scoring model. The pharmacy still fills it.

Nolla Health is starting a first-in-the-nation Utah pilot that lets AI diagnose acne from a face scan and send prescriptions to pharmacies without a doctor in the loop for each case. Patients scan their face, enter history, get a severity score, and one of eight topical treatments. The first 100 scripts are pre-reviewed by a doctor; later phases drop to weekly, then 10% monthly audits. Doctors have already fought the state’s AI healthcare pilots.

What Happened

Bloomberg; Bloomberg Law. Pilot starts Monday 5 Oct 2026.

ChatGPT will sell you something while the image is still rendering

62% generated… and here’s a sofa.

OpenAI is testing a new visual ad format in ChatGPT later this month in the US. The first placement is during image generation: labeled product images sit under the progress bar, separate from the image you asked for. ChatGPT now claims 1.2 billion weekly users; ads stay on Free/Go, not Pro. Measurement partners include LiveRamp, AppsFlyer, DoubleVerify.

Google blacked out the water numbers. Copy-paste undid it.

They redacted the swimming pools. The clipboard disagreed.

Google filed Nebraska data-center reports with electricity and water marked trade secret. Highlighting the black bars and pasting revealed Lincoln’s Agate LLC at 52.65 MW peak and 13.3 million gallons of water; Papillion’s Fireball LLC at 548 million gallons. Six centers totaled 765 million gallons. The same paste job showed nine-figure tax-refund expectations. Local story dated 30 Sep; it is trending now on HN.

Gemini is testing “the whole Mac,” while Apple is locking the disk

Apple put a deadbolt on the Mac. Google’s next toggle is “give us the house.

A hidden “Additional sandbox options” toggle in Google’s Gemini Mac app would let the agent read/create/modify/delete files anywhere on the machine, talk to Mail, Safari, and Messages, and act without asking every time. Purchases and legal terms would still need a human. Google has not announced a ship date. This lands the same week Apple moved to wall agents off the disk.

What Happened

TestingCatalog via BleepingComputer, 3 Oct, still circulating 5 Oct. Hidden Gemini Desktop setting, not a public launch.

The spy chief now runs Super Intelligence

They outlawed the word, then gave the spies the job.

Trump named DNI Jay Clayton, FTC chair Andrew Ferguson, Pentagon R&E chief Emil Michael, and OPM director Scott Kupor to lead a “Super Intelligence Force,” reporting to him and Susie Wiles. It will coordinate with consumers, public-interest groups, *religious organizations*, infrastructure, and “Super Intelligence companies.” This follows the order that federal agencies stop saying “AI.” Four people, four day jobs.

A 125B model just moved into the gaming PC

The model that was supposed to live in a warehouse now lives next to a GPU that plays *Cyberpunk*.

Strata is an open-source inference stack that runs Qwen 3.8 Flash Next (125B MoE, few experts active per token) on consumer boxes. HN’s headline number is ~100 tok/s on a 4090; the repo’s own tables show high double-digits on a 12 GB card plus 32–64 GB RAM, fully local, OpenAI-compatible localhost. This is a builder-behavior change, not a lab leaderboard.
