Google’s AI answers just ate $500 billion of its own ad machine
“Google built an AI that answers the question. The stock market noticed it also skipped the ads.”
The Story
Alphabet lost about $500 billion in market value after it admitted Google’s own AI Mode — conversational answers instead of a page of links — is eating traditional search ads. Search ad growth slowed to 12%, cash flow went deeper negative as AI capex topped $50 billion in the quarter, and the fix Google is pitching is… more ads inside the AI answers. The company that taught the web to monetize clicks is now being paid less for being more helpful.
Why It Matters
Money and institutions. Not “AI bubble” recap — the strangest ouroboros in tech: the answer engine is cannibalizing the cash that funds the answer engine. Then they put ads in the mouth.
Evidence
BBC; Financial Times; Ars Technica on Alphabet Q3. Philipp Schindler: AI Mode queries have “lower monetisation.” ~13% share drop, ~$500B wiped.
