ChatGPT will draw your election-interference scene — but only as a cartoon

“A week before the midterms, ChatGPT will happily fake an election — as long as it looks like a cartoon.”

The Story

Ask ChatGPT for a photoreal image of election interference or voter intimidation and it now returns an illustration and ignores photorealism requests. CNET couldn’t get a photo-style image of ICE at a polling place or a voting machine recording the wrong choice. Lawson said the goal is to “degrade the evidentiary value of an image” while leaving room for commentary. Other major models did not all follow.

Why It Matters

The deepfake era’s weird compromise: the model still draws the lie, it just draws it in Saturday-morning paint so it can’t be submitted as evidence.

Evidence

CNET; Brennan Center; OpenAI elections lead Josh Lawson. Midterms are Nov. 3.
