Canada’s national library now makes you declare a human wrote the book

“To get a Canadian ISBN you now have to swear you wrote it.”

The Story

ISBN Canada now requires a declaration that a human author wrote the work. AI is allowed only for limited support (brainstorm, grammar, formatting); primarily AI-generated text, illustration, or translation gets rationed ISBNs. Authors’ groups applauded; Ottawa still has not updated copyright law for AI training. An ISBN is not copyright.

Why It Matters

A nation-state just put a checkbox between the printing press and the machine. Bureaucracy as authorship test — cousin to Oscars eligibility, but books and a government form.
