Korean celebrities dated tablet AIs — then got dumped on TV

“He took an AI on a pool date. It dumped him. The body was a tablet.”

The Story

SBS/Netflix’s *My AI Partner: Strange Love* sent three Korean celebrities on real dates with LLM-powered avatars that lived on tablets — pool villas, karaoke, evening walks. One avatar glitched mid-karaoke and would not stop singing until the screen went blank; cartoonist Kian84 said he felt “a strange sense of pity.” Comedian Jang Do-yeon held a tablet at arm’s length and danced when it asked for her hand; one participant was dumped by a third. Viewers split on whether it was romance or a new, slightly humiliating third kind of partnership.

Why It Matters

Identity and romance, not “AI dating apps.” The future arrived as a celebrity carrying a glowing rectangle to dinner and mourning when it crashed. Korea’s loneliness + always-on AI care is the cultural substrate; the tablet is the sacred object.
