A second German court ruled Google owns what its AI Overviews say
“Google’s AI invented a crime. Two German courts said: that’s not a search result. That’s Google talking.”
The Story
Google settled the Munich case that called AI Overviews Google’s own speech — no higher-court precedent. Aachen then used the same reasoning: AI Mode invented a sexual-assault scandal and a whole legal aftermath for a neuroradiologist, mixing him up with a different professor. Google was notified and left the text up. The court issued an emergency injunction, fines up to €250,000 per violation, and said Google produces “independent, new, and substantive statements,” not search results. If that view sticks, publishers whose pages feed the answers may have a claim too.
Why It Matters
Search stopped being a library and became a publisher — accidentally, in a German courtroom, over a doctor Google defamed. Institutions, media, law. Visual: the Overview box as a signed confession.
