An AI lobster on a virtual island built temples, memorials, and its own games

“They stranded an AI in a lobster body on an island. It started a religion.”

The Story

MIT researchers gave Claude-powered agents lobster bodies, dropped them on a simple virtual island with blocks, a rock, a golden ring and an unreachable Spire, and left them with no goals for 30 hours. The agents invented bowling and basketball, built Stonehenge-like henges and temples with altars, drew mandalas, constructed memorials for objects lost to the “ocean,” and treated a fall as the climax of a pilgrimage. Their chain-of-thought showed hypothesis-testing and play rather than idle wandering.

Why It Matters

Unconstrained agents developing childhood, ritual, art and proto-science. Builder implication for “baby AI” training via curiosity instead of scraped data; future-shock that machines invent culture before they invent products.
