OpenAI’s toilet-paper bug: an engineer bugged the exec room, then the model named him

“They hid a conference-room bug in toilet paper. OpenAI’s AI pointed at the employee.”

The Story

FBI arrested OpenAI engineer Abdulrahman Alfozan, a 35-year-old Saudi national, for allegedly planting an encrypted recorder in a USB port behind a TV in an executive conference room. The device was wrapped in toilet paper, installed around Sept. 28, and found Sept. 30; OpenAI says its own models helped identify who planted it. Prosecutors say the room was used for confidential technical and strategic talks; OpenAI says it has no sign he stole weights, code, or customer data.

Why It Matters

Superintelligence labs now look like spy sets: a $5 gadget, toilet paper, CCTV of a man peeking behind a TV, and the company’s model as the informant. National-security language (“Super Intelligence Force”) colliding with office farce is the story, not generic “insider threat.
