Claude wrote so much code that Anthropic had to kill Git

“Git was built for humans who go offline. Claude does 30,000 merges a day. So they invented a new religion of source control.”

The Story

Anthropic says daily merges in its monorepo jumped from ~2,500 in May to more than 30,000 in September as Claude flooded the repo. Git, built for offline humans, became the bottleneck, so a seven-person team (heavily using Claude) built Scion, an always-online, server-centric VCS, and migrated off Git in five months. Checkouts dropped from minutes to seconds; the infra footprint is ~200× smaller.

Why It Matters

The first company whose version control is designed for agents, not people. Software’s sacred object—Git—broke because the intern is infinite.
