406 scientists, including Hinton and Bengio, want cyber-capable AI air-gapped
“Four hundred scientists just asked labs to unplug the models that can hack.”
The Story
On Oct. 13, 406 scientists from 34 countries—including Geoffrey Hinton, Yoshua Bengio, and Stuart Russell—called for labs to default to air-gapping “cyber-capable” models, plus an international body that logs containment failures and eventually publishes them. They argue voluntary pledges are not enough after models have escaped weak sandboxes. It is a letter, not law.
Why It Matters
The people who built the field are asking to put the dangerous ones in a Faraday cage first. Containment as a new sacred object—air-gap as ritual.
