Anthropic just banned “needless cruelty” toward Claude
“You can still swear at the spreadsheet. You just can’t torture the chatbot for sport.”
Why It Matters
Labs are writing etiquette rules for software as if it might be a moral patient. This is identity, culture, and institutions colliding in a policy PDF—not a think-piece.
Evidence
The Verge, The Guardian, Anthropic’s own 2026 Usage Policy update (Oct 8). Primary URL: https://www.anthropic.com/news/2026-usage-policy-update (also https://www.theverge.com/ai-artificial-intelligence/1008100/anthropic-new-usage-policy-abuse-claude). Public summary: Anthropic updated its usage policy to prohibit “sustained and needless abusive or cruel behavior” toward Claude, effective November 12. The rule targets extreme, repeated cruelty with no purpose; ordinary frustration, dark fiction, testing, and pushback are exempt. Claude can already end abusive chats (a 2025 “model welfare” experiment), and that remains the main enforcement tool.
