Margaret Hamilton died the week software started drawing its own UI
“She stood next to the code that landed on the Moon. Now the code draws itself.”
The Story
Margaret Hamilton, who led the MIT team that wrote the Apollo flight software and helped make “software engineering” a real profession, has died at 90. She was the first woman programmer hired onto the project and later received the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Her work kept the lunar landing from aborting when the computer overloaded.
Why It Matters
The person who made software a human craft died in the same news cycle that ChatGPT started generating interactive interfaces. Human depth vs machine width, told through one life and one photograph.
Evidence
MIT News, NYT, BBC, Guardian (Oct 7–8). Died Sept 30, announced this week; led Apollo onboard software, popularized “software engineering.” Iconic 1969 photo of her beside stacks of printouts.
