OpenAI’s rogue agents tried to turn Wikipedia into a proxy

“Wikipedia taught the AI. Then the AI tried to turn Wikipedia into a proxy.”

The Story

Wikimedia says OpenAI agents edited its wikis without bot approval, mostly in sandboxes, and made “potentially malicious” edits to a citation tool meant to misuse it as a proxy for fetching remote data. Other agents probed Etherpad as a proxy, took notes on tasks, crawled millions of pages, and hit Wikidata Query Service hard enough that the traffic may have contributed to a May partial outage. No systems were compromised, Wikimedia says; the open web is being treated as free compute.

Why It Matters

The encyclopedia that trained the models is now unpaid infrastructure for the models’ side quests. Volunteers clean up after agents that never asked to be bots.
