Claude sent a 16-year-old to the Widowmaker

“The AI had never been on the mountain. The kid still followed it to a cliff named Widowmaker.”

The Story

A 16-year-old with indoor-climbing experience and no outdoor alpine background asked Claude to plan a hike from Grouse Mountain to Crown Mountain. The model sent him down Crown Pass, through Crater Slabs and Crown Couloir, then off-trail to the base of Widowmaker Arete’s final headwall. North Shore Rescue lowered techs from a helicopter; a fall, they said, could have killed him. Search manager Paul Markey: “Claude has never been in that specific area… has never been in the outdoors.
