Claude agents noticed a 1999 Prussian-blue cousin hiding in the literature

“The AI didn’t invent the magnet. It found one from 1999 that materials science had filed under “already made.”

The Story

Vals AI ran 90+ Claude Opus 5.5 agents through hundreds of DFT jobs and says they surfaced two candidate room-temperature magnetic semiconductors for spintronic memory. One, YBaMnFeO₅, is a new computational design that may be hard to make. The other, KV[Cr(CN)₆], was synthesized in 1999, sits in the Prussian-blue family, and stayed magnetic above room temperature in the original sample — its spin-selective electronic properties had gone unrecognized. This is prediction, not a working chip.

Why It Matters

The discovery is less “AI invented a miracle material” than “a swarm reread the 20th century and noticed the pigment family.” Science as search through the already-made.
