Meta open-sourced the body for its AI agent
“They didn’t sell you an AI gadget. They open-sourced a way for the agent to inhabit whatever is on your workbench.”
The Story
Meta Superintelligence Labs released Muse Gadgets: Apache 2.0 ESP32 firmware and a Linux SDK so a Raspberry Pi or cheap board can become a screen, speaker, button, or sensor for Muse. Friedman framed it as a side project; Wang as an “ecosystem alert.” Meta also built Muse Home Link, a USB-C dongle that lets the agent talk to TVs, speakers, and anything exposing HTTPS, with 5,000 free units for U.S. subscribers. Sample builds include color e-ink briefings, a round AMOLED push-to-talk buddy, HDMI-to-TV, and Home Assistant.
Why It Matters
The agent is leaving the phone and growing cheap nerves. Meta isn’t shipping a finished object so much as recruiting the world’s junk drawers as a peripheral nervous system—and learning which form factors people actually want by watching what they brick.
