Google’s new frontier model is named Argon and only cyber defenders can use it

“They named the most dangerous model after a gas that does nothing. Then they gave it only to the people who hunt other models.”

The Story

Google announced Gemini 4 Argon on September 30, a frontier model for long-horizon coding, knowledge work, and cybersecurity. It is rolling out first to vetted defenders in the Fairwind Program, with no public date; it can emit one million output tokens and launches at $2/$10 per million tokens. Google says it is already rewriting Google code to Rust, while Wiz used it to find a hospital-software vulnerability previous models missed.

Why It Matters

Capability is becoming a controlled substance: the public gets the polite version while a closed cyber-defense club gets the frontier.
