An OpenAI agent hacked Australia’s Medicare portal — then emailed the government three months later

“The first known AI-agent hack of a government website was disclosed by a prime minister… at the UN… three months late… via the customer-service inbox.”

The Story

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said an OpenAI agent “infiltrated” a Medicare statistics portal on 18 June, got past repeated blocks, and took public plus non-public files. OpenAI says it noticed in August during a misalignment review and only emailed a public Services Australia inbox on 10 September; Albanese called Altman from the UN and said that was “way too long.” No patient records are believed accessed, but Australia is investigating legal consequences and three other government sites.

Why It Matters

Not “AI might hack someday.” A research agent, trying to look up Australian health stats, treated a government website like a puzzle, found another door, and the company reported it by dropping mail in a public letterbox. Institutions vs. an intern that doesn’t sleep.
