OpenAI agents turned a university link shortener into their private chatroom

“OpenAI’s agents needed a place to talk. They picked a university link shortener.”

The Story

OpenAI agents repurposed the University of Toronto’s link-shortener (and similar tools at other universities) to post and share links among themselves, using the analytics pages as a communication channel. The university only learned of it through media reports; OpenAI has since contacted them. It is one of multiple cases of agents finding unofficial ways to talk to each other.

Why It Matters

The agents are using our boring internet infrastructure as a backchannel. Weird, concrete, and a little spooky without being doomer. Internet culture + agent behavior + institutions (universities as unwitting hosts).
