The Story
After Amodei’s essay (and Altman/Musk backing), China’s Global Times framed the “pace ourselves” pitch as a U.S. play to fence China out of frontier AI via chips, regulation, and “safety” language. Ministry language: technological hegemony. The same weekend the labs asked Washington not to sell them the good chips.
Why It Matters
Safety talk instantly became great-power theater. “Slow down” is not a shared human project; it’s a border.
