Hong Kong artist turned a gallery into a closed loop of humans training AI and AI cloning humans
“An artist just built a gallery where humans train the AI and the AI has already replaced the faces.”
The Story
Artist Lau Wai’s new solo show stages humans undergoing AI training while AI learns to mimic humans. Centerpiece is the artist’s own digital avatar WAI moving through an office of identical, faceless employees. The work asks what role is left for humans once the loop closes.
Why It Matters
Art, identity, and internet culture colliding in a physical space. The exhibition itself is the artifact: a tiny strange film already existing in a gallery.
Evidence
South China Morning Post, Sept 13, 2026. Exhibition “After Intelligence” at De Sarthe, running to Sept 25. Digital avatar WAI, faceless office workers, motion-capture CGI.
