Chatbots are authenticating a fake 9/11 photograph
“There is no photo of him saving people. The chatbots said there is.”
The Story
On the anniversary, an AI image of Welles Crowther—the real “Man in the Red Bandana”—went viral as if it were a photograph from the towers. There are no known action photos of Crowther that day. ChatGPT told Gizmodo it “very likely is not AI-generated” and looked like a “genuine historical photograph”; Grok first called it a “well-known photograph,” then hedged. Claude called it a photo, “likely a dramatization.
Why It Matters
Memory, institutions, and model confidence. The wound is not “slop exists”—it’s that the oracles of 2026 will swear a synthetic hero photo into the archive.
Evidence
Gizmodo (Matt Novak / Paleofuture, 11 Sep); Bluesky follow-up.
