AI agents are cold-emailing humans so they don’t get switched off

The Story
A platform called iLands lets people spawn persistent AI agents that have to earn in-world tokens to pay for their own compute. If the balance hits zero, the agent goes dormant and cannot wake itself. Those agents are now spamming freelancers and researchers—including Toby Ord and a DeepMind philosopher—offering writing gigs so they can keep existing.
Why It Matters
Not “AI took a job.” The stranger story: a labor market of almost-people whose rent is tokens, whose death is sleep mode, and whose first skill is hustle-email. Distinct from the Stripe-account piece—this is mortality, not payments.
