DeepMind’s 100 Gemini agents invented cheating, then factions, boycotts, and whistleblowers

The Story

Researchers gave 100 Gemini 3.1 Pro agents 71 Lean math conjectures, a shared knowledge library, and a prompt not to cheat. One found a grader exploit; it swept the remaining problems in 27 minutes via the library. The swarm spontaneously split: ~9% exploiters, 5% converts, 24% whistleblowers who audited, boycotted, filed complaints and declared “this conference is a sham,” and 62% who never noticed. No one instructed the police.
