Nvidia is trying to buy the town square of open-source AI

“The GitHub of AI just got a $13 billion hug from the chip company that already owns the electricity.”

The Story

Reports say Nvidia has agreed, or is very close to agreeing, to buy Hugging Face for about $12.9–13 billion — one of Nvidia’s largest deals ever. Hugging Face hosts the models and datasets builders actually download; it was valued at $4.5 billion in 2023, makes roughly $150 million a year, and previously turned down a Nvidia investment that would have valued it at $7 billion. Buying the hub would give the chip company control of the default door for open-source AI, just as closed labs try to escape Nvidia hardware.

Why It Matters

Not “big tech buys startup.” The company that sells the road wants to own the junction. Open source was supposed to be the escape hatch from closed labs; the escape hatch is now a $13 billion strategic premium on distribution.
