Apple just sold a desk that can host a frontier model
“Apple’s most powerful chip ever is not for video. It’s so you can keep the model in the room.”
The Story
Apple launched the M6 (first 2 nm Mac chip) in a new Mac mini and the M5 Ultra (first quad-die M-series, up to 512 GB unified memory, 1.2 TB/s) in a new Mac Studio. Apple’s own copy says the Ultra is for “running compute-intensive frontier AI models on device” and “huge LLMs with hundreds of billions of parameters entirely on device.” M6 adds a Dual 16-core Neural Engine and ~30% more peak GPU AI compute than M5.
Why It Matters
Not “new Mac fast.” The cloud is optional now for a class of builders who used to rent a lab. A $5,499 box is being pitched as a private intelligence plant. Pair with the already-visible hobby of daisy-chaining Macs to run local models.
