UK digital visa system mixed a settled resident up with her identical twin and stranded her in Spain
“The computer decided you are your twin. Now you can’t go home.”
The Story
Nidia Webb, legally settled in the UK for eight years, was stopped at a Spanish departure gate because the Home Office eVisa had linked her digital status to her twin sister. Staff called it a “known issue.” A confirmation email then went to the sister. She only boarded after hours of phone calls.
Why It Matters
Institutions replaced paper with a database and immediately failed the oldest identity edge case: two people who look the same. Digital citizenship is still analog-fragile.
