New EU right-to-repair rules just made manufacturers fix your phone and tablet

“Europe just told Apple and Samsung they have to fix the thing you already bought.”

The Story

EU-wide rules that came into force today give consumers the right to demand repair of technically repairable household and electronic goods (phones, tablets, washers, etc.) at reasonable cost and time, plus spare-part access and a national repair directory. It is a direct policy strike at throwaway gadgets.

Why It Matters

Pairs perfectly with the “own your firmware” story: the law and the agents are both trying to give people their objects back.
