A builder used Claude to reverse-engineer every gadget on his desk and “own” them

“Your webcam already has a secret command shell. An AI just found it for you.”

The Story

Over two weeks a security researcher pointed Claude at the firmware of his webcam, monitor, microphone, capture card and Wi-Fi light. The agent produced working update tools, found plaintext command shells, and let him disable the recording LED and poke memory over the network. Hardware that used to feel sealed is now something you can vibe-code in an evening.

Why It Matters

Agents just turned “your stuff” into editable software. Ownership, security, and tinkering collide in a very concrete, slightly horrifying way.
