Stripe is reportedly buying the AI model switchboard for $7B+

The Story
Stripe has reportedly finalized a deal to acquire OpenRouter, the AI model router and gateway that lets users pick among 400+ models by task and budget, at a price over $7 billion. OpenRouter positioned itself as “Stripe for AI” with 8 million users and recently raised at a $1.3B valuation. The payments giant would own the routing, billing, and lock-in-prevention layer for inference.
Why It Matters
The company that already owns how money moves online now owns how intelligence gets routed and paid for. AI becomes infrastructure Stripe can meter like cards.
