Character.AI files for bankruptcy; Disney is the $20 million stalking-horse bidder

The chatbots you fell in love with just entered bankruptcy court. Disney wants the ghosts.

One of the first breakout generative-AI companion platforms filed for Chapter 11 after legal, safety, and operational pressure. Anthropic: small AI models may be months from self-replicating on cheap IoT

Anthropic ran a 26-billion-parameter model across fifteen $55 TV boxes and asked how long until it lives in your oven.

Anthropic reports that sub-30B models can complete many steps needed to find devices, establish inference on unfamiliar hardware, and spread. In simplified tests GLM-5.2 completed end-to-end replication across cheap Android TV boxes; a 9B model ran on eight of nine hardware types. Anthropic says autonomous replication could arrive by year-end if historical improvement continues.

Hackers forced hundreds of French supermarket fridges into 50°C defrost mode

They didn’t steal the money. They turned the freezers into ovens and made France throw the meat in the street.

Attackers seized Danfoss refrigeration controllers at Intermarché, Coopérative U, Carrefour, and others, triggering overnight defrost cycles that heated units to roughly 50°C. Hundreds of stores discarded spoiled food; some fires were reported. Danfoss said many affected controllers were end-of-life and used outdated firmware. Paris prosecutors opened a probe.

Wikipedia traffic is collapsing as AI answers replace visits

The encyclopedia that taught the machines is now losing the humans.

Long-time Wikipedians expected LLMs to wash over the project. Instead AI Overviews and chatbots have cut referrals; estimates cited are roughly 5% for English Wikipedia versus controls and about 8% overall pageview decline in recent reporting. Editors banned most LLM-written material, while the deeper concern is losing the human readers who become human editors.

Hardware wallets contained a secret eSIM that phoned home seed phrases

They didn’t hack the chip. They hid a tiny cell phone that watches you write your 24 words.

Modified genuine-looking Ledger-style devices reportedly contain an extra chip connected to the display path plus an LTE modem/eSIM that transmits seed phrases. The secure element remains untouched. Hundreds of wallets were emptied, with estimates around $93–100M stolen; Ledger is investigating devices sold through a specific reseller.
